Evesham Colts 12 Stourbridge Colts 34

In the build up to their penultimate league game at Worcester on Sunday 26th March, the Colts travelled to Evesham for a friendly fixture.

Due to injuries and unavailability, several of the Colts had to play out of position; and with Evesham not being able to field a front row, uncontested scrums were decided on from the start. This made for a very open and scrappy game, where individual performances played a bigger part in the result than the overall team performance.

It was Stourbridge who opened the scoring through flying winger Matt Newey, who outflanked the Evesham defence to go over the line for an unconverted try in the corner. After that, neither team seemed to be able to get a grip on the game, with the play going back and forth. It was Evesham who finally broke the deadlock, with a great break through a number of Stourbridge missed tackles. With the try unconverted, the scores were level at 5 a piece.

The rest of the half was much of the same, but it was Stourbridge who finished the half better, with Alfie Jeavons-Fellows going over for an unconverted try on the stroke of half-time, making the score 5-10.

The score before the break seemed to settle the Stourbridge nerves somewhat and from the kick-off, full back Rob Aikman, fielded the ball, avoided the whole of the Evesham defence to score on 36 minutes. Jacob Piggott-Denison converted the points and 3 minutes later went over for his own unconverted try to make the score 5-22 in Stour's favour.

With the floodgates now open and Stour playing with a little more cohesion and confidence, they dominated possession and territory. Evesham's heads never went down and they battled hard in defence. However, on 53 minutes, Warwick Browne crashed over the line for a converted try, with Zac Jeavons-Fellows crossing the line 9 minutes later making the score 5-34.

Evesham never gave up and for the remainder of the game it was Stourbridge who had to battle in defence. On the stroke of full time, Evesham were finally rewarded, making the score 12-34 on the final whistle. A good result in the end.

Stourbridge Colts currently sit in 5th place in North Midlands Colts League Two; level on points, but with a game in hand over 4th placed Walsall Colts and only 4 points behind 3rd place Sutton Coldfield Colts. A good performance at Sixways on Sunday 26th could see them go into 3rd place. Your support would be very welcome! #COMEONSTOUR!!!
