Stow Rugby Club

The advance party hit the road to the picturesque town of Stow on Friday April 21 2017 to prepare the ground for a weekend of fun after a long season.

They established base camp at the tremendously hospitable Stow ground, headed into the town on a fact-finding mission and successfully located the nearest pub and a shop.

While the days were warm, the nights were down to sub-zero temperatures, and a ban on open fires looked set to make it a cold one for the campers. The resourceful advance party solved the problem by convincing the Club that their portable fire pit was in fact just a very large barbecue.

Saturday saw some early arrivals to add to the numbers and take part in the day’s paint balling
activity. The excursion began with a magical mystery tour around the region after what appeared to be a postcode/sat nav failure.

The sizeable Stourbridge convoy made about turns, and other dodgy traffic manoeuvres, before arriving at the remote woodland combat zone.

Led by head coach Simon, who slipped quickly into Rambo mode once clad in his camo overalls, the troops spent several hours repainting the forest.

The rest of the adults departed - mostly back to the pub.

After the paintballers had been retrieved, the group enjoyed watching a match between Stow seconds against unknown opposition, the best anyone managed to find out was “they are some team from Gloucester”.

After the match Stow provided an outstanding barbecue before Stour’s under 12s took on their Dads, and some of Stow’s players (who were still in the bar) in a game of touch rugby. It is fair to say the Dads were short of a yard or two of pace and some of the ball handling was less than crisp, as a result, the juniors ran rings around their senior opposition.

It was, however, decided the adults could take something from the game in that nobody needed the defibrillator.

After another brutally cold night under canvas, the real competition took place on Sunday as the under 12s took on Stow’s under 12s.

On a very hard pitch, the match began as a close contest with both sides tackling well and playing good competitive rugby.

As the game went on Stour wore down their opposition with stronger rucking and some impressive breakaway play.

As the under 12s headed home, everyone agreed the 2017 tour had been a great success with plenty of fun and some good competitive play (on the Sunday at least).

As always the boys’ behaviour was outstanding, they were a credit to Stourbridge Rugby Club and left having made some new friends at Stow RFC and were presented with a pennant for our club house as a memento of our weekend.
