On a very sunny day at Stourton Park Stourbridge kicked off their cup campaign against Old Salteians, Old Salts and the Lions are in the same league this year due to a parallel move for the Lions following a league restructure. Old Salts return to Stourbridge in a few weeks for a league fixture so this first encounter was doubly important.
Stourbridge started the stronger, dominating possession and territory for the first 10 minutes; the pressure got the better of Old Salts causing them to give a penalty in easy reach for Sam Wilson’s first penalty of the afternoon. The Lions maintained their dominance causing frustration for the Old Salts forwards; this led to the referee warning one of their players for stamping and 2 minutes later issuing a red card for a similar act.
Sam Wilson then saw an opportunity created by having the extra man and sent a cross field kick over the try line for Aaron Boffey to claim and score in the right hand corner to make the score 8-0 to the Lions, the following conversion was successful by Sam Wilson, 10 – 0 to the Lions. Old Salts then had their first real taste of possession and moved up the pitch well showing their strength with ball in hand. Eventually the Lions defence had a momentary lapse and an Old Salts player was able to fall over the line in the corner, the conversion was missed making the score Lions 10 – Old Salts 5.
Conceding the try gave the Lions the boost they needed to get a grip back on the game. With the best forward and back linking play the Lions had shown in the game so far, they made their way deep into Old Salts territory creating an opportunity for Lions returnee Tom Noot to pick and go around the side of the ruck to crash over the Lions second try of the game, again the conversion was successful, making the score 17-5 to the Lions just before half time.
The second half got under way and after a few minutes the Lions were under pressure again which eventually led to conceding a second try. However, the Lions again bounced back quickly and following a number of strong set pieces in the right hand corner of the pitch were able to pass the ball out to Duncan Chance on the left wing enabling him to round his opposite man and score in the corner, Lions 20 – Old Salts 10.
Old Salts again bounced back scoring another unconverted try before Sam Wilson slotted a penalty 5 minutes from time making the final score Stourbridge Lions 23 – Old Saltenians 15. A strong performance for the Lions with much more to offer over the coming weeks, Head Coach; Jon Tibbetts will be keen to cut down on the number of penalties the Lions gave away ready for next weeks clash at home in their league opener to Ludlow. Special mentions should go to Tom Noot and Jason Hampton for their dominance at the break down and countless line breaks.
