The Lions welcomed Moseley Oak to Stourton Park on Saturday

The Lions welcomed Moseley Oak to Stourton Park on Saturday for a league and cup double header, Stourbridge Lions were in a buoyant mood following on from wins in their opening cup and league fixtures.
Moseley Oak started the stronger and soon asserted their forward dominance in the loose committing their big men to rucks in greater numbers than the Lions, causing turnovers at the break down. It was this forward based play that led to the first try of the game. Moseley scored in the left hand corner following a series of pick and drives, initially by Simon Homer before Joe Toth crashed over the line, the conversion was missed making the score 5-0 to Moseley Oak.
The Lions then started to find their rhythm, moving the ball from forwards to backs and using the full width of the pitch, this pressure eventually told and resulted in Moseley Oak conceding the penalty in range for Sam Wilson to get the Lions on the board. The score now Stourbridge Lions 3 – Moseley Oak 5.
Moseley Oak came back strongly again through their forwards making inroads into the Lions defence, they again used their weight advantage allowing James weaver to crash over the line to make the score Stourbridge Lions 3 – Moseley Oak 10. HT
The second half started in the same way the first half finished, with Moseley Oak using their centres affectively to punch a hole in the middle of the Lions defence, the Lions recovered well to keep Moseley out. However, Moseley Oak went back to what had worked for them in the first half and again stuk with their forward based play with Ben Gerry scoring in the corner, another missed conversion and the score now 15 – 3 to Mosley Oak.
A short while later Stourbridge began to fight back into the game and the elements that had been missing so far started to fall into place, a whole team move went from left to right and back again to leave Tom Dews in the centres delivering a miss pass out wide to no 8 Tom Noott for a try in the right hand corner. Lions 8 –Moseley Oak 15.
Shortly before the end Moseley converted a penalty to make the final score 8-18 to the visitors, the Lions had another good break after this, however a pass went astray and the game was over. Moseley Oak were deserved victors on the day with the Lions having much more to offer in future weeks, competing for and maintaining the ball at the break down will undoubtedly be the focus at training this week.
