FOUR ON THE BOUNCE!

A tough and entertaining home game against Veseyans ended with a fourth straight win for the Lions by 24-18, a bonus point victory that maintains a 5th place in a very competitive league.

Veseyans came to Stour determined to put the 70 point thrashing earlier in the season to bed and early on they were the dominant side, playing with real freedom and purpose. It was no surprise that they scored a try out wide after 10 mins. Play continued mostly in the Lions half with their defence asleep for much of this period, but after 20 mins a fine break and astute pass by Ben Trinham left his cousin Josh to stroll under the posts for a converted try for a 7-5 lead.

The rest of the first half was very competitive with fine play from both sides but the Lions gained the upper hand with a fine try down the right wing from Scotty Langdon. The half, which seemed endless, ended with a 12-5 Lions lead.

Veseyans came out with even more purpose than the start and scored within the first 3 mins. A series of phases and breaks through a seemingly tiring Lions defence left the away side a try and conversion to equal the scores.

Again, in a thoroughly entertaining match the play swung one way then another, a penalty from Veseyans answered by a try close in by Meakin and a conversion to leave the Lions 19-15 ahead. Another penalty with around 10 mins left gave the home fans some concerns but a final try by Loverock sealed the win.

An entertaining match enjoyed by all who were there but the Lions again showed some worrying lapses in concentration and focus that have undone them before this season. Credit too to Veseyans, who put in a tremendous effort to stay the course. There were good home performances by a number of players but mention must be made of Danny Cox. Coggie put in some good tackles, was positive in defence and attack and made a number of fine breaks from the wing. Not bad for an old man!

Next week is top of the table and already champions Bridgnorth. The Lions, whatever happens, have proved more than capable of being a force in this league and there is now a core of 20 players or more all capable of carrying this club to greater heights.
