Community Department Update

Community Department Update

Clarkson McLeod14 Oct 2022 - 12:49

Hear from Head of Community, Chad Thorne, about recent progress made by our Community Department, in his latest blog.

The beginning of this academic year has brought further growth to the Community Department at Stourbridge Rugby. We are continuing to deliver many exciting projects and looking at taking on more schools across the area through the company’s Educational Solutions, delivered by our experienced Community Coaches.

Please read on to find out more about our exciting projects.

School Delivery

Last year was successful in terms of school delivery, but we are already looking set to eclipse that in 2022-23.

We have returned for this academic year working in partnership with 18 education providers, from primary schools through to post-16 education. One of our most popular provisions is still our Reading and Rugby project, and we are currently delivering this at seven primary schools. Our coaches predominantly work with children who may not be engaged with reading or do not have access to this away from school. The programme is designed to use rugby as a vehicle to break down barriers and associate reading with rugby union, through 60-minute reading sessions and 60-minute coaching and fun games.

As well as our Reading and Rugby provisions we are also delivering Mentoring and Rugby in Secondary Schools. Our coaches focus the students on social, emotional and mental health behaviours, looking at how to use your teammates/friends, using each other’s strengths. Mentoring and Rugby uses the techniques learnt in our sessions to make them transferable in everyday life.

For more information on our Educational Solutions and what we have to offer, head to the Community Department section at the top of your screen.

Stourbridge Rugby Pups

We have just launched our Stourbridge Rugby Pups sessions, starting on October 11 and 18. This is split across two sessions – 2–3-year-olds and 3 years and over – on Tuesday mornings from 10-11:30am. This new project introduces the young ones to our brilliant sport through fun and inclusive indoor games.

Rugby & HAF Camps

Our rugby camps continue to be a great success and we are re looking forward to our next one from October 24-26. With camps running every possible break from school, we have accommodated more than 500 children from the age of 5-15 over the last 12 months. You can book your child’s place by clicking HERE.

As well as our own rugby camps we are also working in partnership with Dudley CVS who help us run our HAF provisions. The Holiday, Activities and Food programme is for children aged 4-16 who receive free school meals and it involves multi-sport activities, as well as arts and crafts. Our next HAF Camp will take place during the Christmas holidays.

Walking Rugby

We are pleased to confirm that Walking Rugby is returning to Stourbridge. Thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund, Sport England and Co-op, we are able to deliver Walking Rugby at Stourton Park, and please keep an eye on all of our social media for more information. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone aged 50 and over to get involved in this great version of the game of rugby. It is open to both men and women and no prior experience is needed.
