Chris Poole (Life Member and Club Stalwart) 1946 -2024

We are saddened to report the death of a much-loved Club Man, Chris Poole.

His close friend Pete Courtis shares a few memories of Chris with us;

Chris started rugby at King Edward's progressing to the First XV. At King Edward’s, he was a place kicker which as a prop was unusual in those days. On leaving King Edward's he joined Stourbridge RFC.
He tells the story that having attended only one training session over the summer he was invited to turn out for the Greyhounds at home in early September (by card in those days) against Stafford. However, as often happens in the lower sides he got a phone call on early Saturday morning to say “your selected for the 3rds away at Stafford. “Chris described the experience of having spent the whole of the eighty minutes with his nose in the Stafford mud caused by a very old, wizened Stafford prop.
He was a quick learner and progressed up the sides to both the United and the Extras for most of his playing career with an odd elevation to the 1st XV. In the lower sides he had a significant reputation as a goal kicker and a very reliable prop. However, his playing career was cut short by injury in the 1970's.

Always a supporter of the Club even though his playing days were over. He was a regular at both home and away 1stXV games with the likes of the Vernon Davies', the Rooney’s', the Brownes’, the Jenkins', the Bates' and others.

On retirement from work he got the tap on the shoulder from Doc Dyson with the words “you look as though you could help” as Doc explained “when you were playing you just assumed the pitches got done !!!!” Chris was part of the ground staff from the mid-1990s, first under Doc Dyson, then Ray Greenway, Bill Harris and Roger Cartwright.

Chris whilst always enthusiastic with an impressive attendance record for the twice weekly working sessions down the Club, he was adamant that others could have the limelight and the responsibilities of being the “gaffer”

Chris became a Life Member of the Club in support of John Jeavons-Fellows' upgrade to the clubhouse.

He was a member of the mid-week gym club and particularly enjoyed the Willow Tree Café to talk through old rugby exploits with his old pals and the more recent youth policy of Ceri, Nigel and Trevor.

Chris leaves wife Fred, Kate and Steve (a Mini and Junior player in the 1990s) and four grandchildren whom he adored. Two of his grandchildren now play Junior Rugby for Hove RFC, sadly Chris never got to them play in person but proudly watched them in action via video.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral service will be held for Chris on 20th September at Stourbridge Crematorium, 2.10pm service.
