Match report:
Stourbridge 2nd XV 24 - Burntwood 15
Location: Stourton Park
Stourbridge Lions delivered a statement performance as they continued their pursuit of Aston, securing a vital 24–15 victory over a well‑drilled and resilient Burntwood side. The win not only keeps the Lions’ promotion hopes alive but also sets up the tantalising prospect of a winner‑takes‑all showdown on April 18 at Stourton.
Lions Blaze to a 19–0 Lead
The home side flew out of the blocks, producing one of their sharpest opening spells of the season. Their intensity, handling and physicality overwhelmed Burntwood early on as the Lions surged into a commanding 19–0 lead.
Key to the dominance were standout displays from Charlie Thompson, James Dallison, Ollie Lynch, and Ethan Gilbert, each of whom brought energy and precision, both sides of the ball. The backline moved with purpose and control, with George Cattell's box kicking was critical. Stour were superbly marshalled by experienced campaigner Mark George, whose know how and aggression added a touch of real class throughout the afternoon.
Tries Keep Burntwood at Bay
The Lions’ scores came courtesy of two tries from Will Shillingford, whose pace and awareness repeatedly troubled the Burntwood defence. Additional tries from Russ Brown and Dylan Bailey‑Beech stretched the lead and ensured the hosts stayed in front for the entire contest.
From the tee, James Westwood added the extra points, maintaining scoreboard pressure at key moments.
Burntwood Battle Back
To their credit, Burntwood never folded. Tough, organised, and persistent, they mounted a strong fightback in the second half, testing the Lions’ defensive resolve. Their structured approach and physicality earned them two well‑worked tries, narrowing the gap and keeping the result in doubt heading into the final quarter.
But the Lions’ earlier dominance—and their determined defensive stand late on—proved enough to keep Burntwood at arm’s length.
A Statement Victory with Bigger Tests Ahead
With this crucial win secured, Stourbridge Lions now turn their attention to a potentially season‑defining clash on April 18, where their chase to overhaul Aston could culminate in a dramatic final‑day battle.
For now, they can take confidence from a performance full of attacking flair, individual excellence and collective resilience—qualities they will need in abundance as the stakes rise.

Match report:
Stourbridge Panthers 19 - Telford Hornets Women 46
Location Stourton Park
Stourbridge Panthers hosted Telford Hornets in what has become a consistently tight and competitive fixture in NC2 Midlands West. Backed by a large crowd enjoying the early spring sunshine, the stage was perfectly set for an entertaining afternoon of rugby. Having secured victory in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, Stourbridge came into this game confident—but it was Telford who ultimately came out on top this time around.
The match began at a high tempo, with both sides trading scores in an end-to-end contest. Stourbridge struck first, but Telford responded quickly, setting the tone for a “ping-pong” first half where neither side could gain a decisive advantage. However, just before the halftime whistle, Telford edged ahead, taking a five-point lead into the break.
Stourbridge’s points came through some strong attacking phases, with Alex Yates crossing the line twice and Evie Hurrell adding another try. Izzy Taylor-McGill contributed from the tee with two well-taken conversions, keeping the scoreboard ticking in what was a fiercely contested opening period.
In the second half, Telford’s pace proved to be the difference. Missed tackles from Stourbridge allowed Telford’s quick runners to break through the defensive line, with their dangerous wing play causing particular problems. Despite Stourbridge’s determination and effort, they struggled to contain Telford’s speed and attacking threat.
There were still standout individual performances for Stourbridge, with Millie Bassett earning Player of the Match for an impressive display, showing determination and quality throughout.
The game provided plenty of entertainment, especially for the lively crowd and neutral spectators, with open, flowing rugby and moments of individual brilliance on display.
With the result, Stourbridge remain just four points ahead of Telford in the table, with three games left to play—setting up an exciting run-in to the end of the season.
Colts: Stourbridge 45-40 Wolverhampton
We welcomed Wolverhampton to Stourton Park with a point to prove, after a much weakened team suffered a chastening defeat away earlier in the season.
With some players returning from injury, and some away at sevens tournaments, and some last minute injuries, we again had a much changed line up. We also took the opportunity to ‘blood’ some u16’s, giving them the chance to play up and challenge themselves against quality opposition.
In a strange game where we always felt in control, but couldn’t get away on the scoreboard, we always were ahead, but weren’t efficient enough transferring that dominance to the scoreboard. With changes of personnel we also conceded ground out wide too regularly with spacing and speed of our defensive lines not being up to scratch.
However, in a very entertaining game there was a lot of quality rugby. Up front Sols destructive carrying put us on the front foot, our front row rotation kept us on the top in the scrum, U16 captain Zane helped boss the line out and maintain our structure, and Louis’ carrying and work rate in the back row has shown huge improvements as the seasons gone on.
In the backs, it was great to see George easing back in after long term injury, Tebbs played a number of positions, and bought his usual assured quality to all of them! Strings were pulled expertly by Owen the u16 fly half capping an assured performance with a try, superbly supported by another U16 Oli W playing inside centre, breaking lines and stopping attacks with crunching tackles, and contributing 2 tries. U16 full back Jackson swept up all kicks and showed great decision making and ability to return them with interest.
Other tries scored by Charlie H, with a typical muscular carry, Louis crashing over from close range, and Flanker Charlie L running in 2 tries out wide, showing our structure and game plan working sometimes! Jacob our Hooker adding 5 conversions from the tee.
The club would also like to say a heartfelt farewell to Mia Maduagwu and Kelsie Tolley, who are moving on to new adventures. Between them, the pair have shared 50 caps and have both played an important role in the squad’s journey. They leave their shirts in a better place, and everyone at Stourbridge thanks them for their commitment, contribution, and service to the team. They go with our very best wishes for the future.
