The sunshine and firm pitch suited the Lions’ style of play and asserted their dominance from the first whistle. The Stourbridge back row went out flying and soon caused a turnover that led to the pack forming a maul and Captain Stuart Doolittle went over for his 20th try of the season, the conversion was missed making the score 5-0 to the Lions. A second turnover led to some quick hands through the backs to centre Aaron Boffey, who beat his opposite man to score to the right of the posts, fly half Tom (Baby) Mitchell added to extra 2 making the score 12-0 to the Lions after just 10 minutes.
The Lions were then put on the back foot for a while and were forced to absorb sustained pressure from Edwardians. The home side were unlucky to not score when the referee blew up without playing advantage as their flanker picked up a loose ball a few meters out from the line. The Edwardians Fly Half slotted the resultant penalty to make the score 12-3.
The Lions then regained control after winning a lineout resulting in a second Doolittle try after a 13 man maul in the right corner, Tom Mitchell again added the extras to make the score 19-3. The Lions then added another try, scored by James Mitchell following a fortunate bounce allowing him to scoop up the ball and dive over the line securing the 4 try bonus point. Again, his brother Tom slotted the conversion and made the score 26-3.
The home side then came back to score their first try of the game. A combination of uncharacteristic missed tackles from the Lions backs and a piece of individual skill from the Edwardians full back resulted in the 15 scoring to the left of the Lions’ posts. Their 10 added the conversion and the score was 26-10.
The Lions then started to reassert their dominance and scored 2 tries in quick succession, the first came from Doolittle crashing over in the left corner for his hat-trick and the second from wing James Mitchell rounding his opposite man to score under the posts for his brace. Both conversions were added by Tom Mitchell to make the score 40-10.
A few minutes before the end the Edwardians number 8 scored a consolation try, making the final score 40-17. A dominate performance from the Lions keeps their promotion hopes alive and with 3 games remaining starting with a home game against Wednesbury next week, the Lions are still in control of their own destiny!
