Stourbridge Lions 58 Stafford 13

Stafford travelled to Stourton Park on Saturday seeking to build on their good start to the season and with a reputation for solid scrummaging, unfortunately they came up against a team in which coach John, 'Tibbo Tibbetts has skilfully blended youth with experience. The young cubs provided a display of high intensity rugby while the older lions directed and organised the play.

From the kick off Stafford were under pressure and the home side scored two tries in the first ten minutes of play. Stunned Stafford fought their way back into contention only to concede a series of penalties to a disciplined Lions side for Owen Williams to add the points. Almost immediately a charged down kick led to Stourbridge's third try. With the Bowser brothers and Man of the Match James St. Aubyn dominating the set piece and Williams directing the attack Stourbridge added two more tries, for the bonus point, separated by a penalty for the visitors. The half time score of 37 -3 led to some loss of concentration in the home side and Stafford started the second half by winning their first of only two scrums of the game, coming close to scoring only to see Stourbridge break out from their goal line to sweep the length of the pitch and score. The Lions' back row were rampaging with the enthusiasm and pace of Pennock and captain Harris coupled with the experience of Simon Daws. Stafford fought back and scored a hard earned try followed by an equally desperate attack which gave them their second try. It was here that the experienced older heads of Daws, Poole and Langdon came to the fore and Stourbridge refocussed to run in two more tries. Centre Will Hollis marked his first game with two tries, there were two more for Chase Edwards, two for Scott Langdon and one each for George Tildesley and Owen Williams who also kicked two penalties and five conversions. On this occasion Stuart Doolittle failed to sniff out a try.

We saw an exhilarating game played between two teams determined to enjoy their rugby and controlled excellently by referee John Kelly. Spectators were royally entertained.

Next week The Lions travel to Walsall.
